A Morning at Kiawah, Later Than You Think

Sunrise gets the postcards on Kiawah, but the beach is quietest and, honestly, more interesting from around 8 to 10am. The birding crowd is gone. The joggers have finished. The dolphins that strand-feed along the tidal creeks are just getting into their rhythm.

Walk the north end of the beach past The Sanctuary. Bring binoculars if you have them, coffee if you don’t. On a rising tide you can watch a pod push a school of mullet up onto the sand, feed for maybe six seconds, and slip back into the water. It’s an event you don’t plan; you just have to be there in a slightly wider window than the guidebooks tell you.
